This problem lends itself to further exploration of fundamental mechanisms and concepts such as time-out, multicast, consensus, and failure detector. We will survey recent theoretical results of studies related to agreement problems and show how system engineers can use this information to gain deeper insight into the challenges they encounter.

Performance and Scalability of Distributed Software Architectures: An SPE Approach
Distributed systems were once the exception, constructed only rarely and with great difficulty by developers who spent significant amounts of time mastering the technology. Now, as modern software technologies have made distributed systems easier to construct, they have become the norm. Unfortunately, many distributed systems fail to meet their performance objectives when they are initially con...
متن کاملStatic Task Allocation in Distributed Systems Using Parallel Genetic Algorithm
Over the past two decades, PC speeds have increased from a few instructions per second to several million instructions per second. The tremendous speed of today's networks as well as the increasing need for high-performance systems has made researchers interested in parallel and distributed computing. The rapid growth of distributed systems has led to a variety of problems. Task allocation is a...
متن کاملValidating Distributed Software Modeled with UML
The development of correct OO distributed software is a daunting task as soon as the distributed interactions are not trivial. This is due to the inherent complexity of distributed systems (latency, error recovery, etc.), leading to numerous problems such as deadlocks, race conditions, and many difficulties in trying to reproduce such error conditions and debug them. The OO technology is ill eq...

متن کاملA Formal Architectural Design Patterns-Based Approach to Software Understanding
Mastering the complexity of programs and systems, particularly distributed systems, should lead to signi cant improvements in program and system understanding. In this paper we present a formal approach for (distributed) software understanding based on abstraction hierarchies represented by architectural design patterns. This approach allows us to model the distributed software applications thr...
